moodle
Moodle
Moodle is widely used and well established in secondary and higher education. The platform is not K-5 friendly, although grades 6-8 could benefit from learning the platform. Fairly difficult setup requires SQL databases and would require schools to have technical assistance. There are still concerns about Moodle's level of security for student PII. Free
edmodo
Edmodo
Edmodo is very basic. The simplicity of the interface makes it accessible to students as early as 4th grade. Simple setup just requires verification of teaching credentials. There are still concerns about Edmodo's level of security for student PII. The tools are very limited but a good starter package for educators just learning to use LMS's. Free
canvas
Canvas
Canvas has a pleasant UI and works with enough ease to start using the system around Grade 4. We are currently seeking information about security and pricing for the platform. $$$
blackboard
Blackboard
Blackboard is a very advanced system with a large range of tools and customizable options for teachers and students. It is a lot to take on, so we advise people to start out on a more simple format and then move up to BB when your educators are ready. They can even move to this platform individually as their comfort level with the LMS format increases. Still checking on PII issues and data storage. There is a free build and an upgraded platform available for purchase.

haiku
Haiku
Very simple and effective. Easy to customize. Limited set of tools but has everything needed to help teachers transition from paper to digital. Still checking on PII issues and data storage. $$$

google
Google
Classroom

The jury is still out. Google has made the full transition to device management and content delivery with Classroom a fully functioning LMS. Unfortunately, many institutions backed away from Google because of data storage and student PII issues. The system looks interesting but until people feel safe with Google it will be hard to know how strong the platform is.

Waiting on demo.

Free but service upgrades can be purchased and paid apps have to be purchased by license.
hapara
Hapara
If you want to use Google Apps in the classroom and manage their use without moving toward Classroom, Hapara is another option. Very low license prices.
